Winter is the season most itineraries abandon Kyoto — which is exactly why it is our favourite season to work in.

The skeleton

  • Days 1–2 — Arrive in Osaka, private car to Kyoto, a machiya in Higashiyama. Nothing planned that evening
  • Days 3–4 — A moss garden reserved at dawn; postcards at the kotatsu; a tea ceremony held for two
  • Days 5–6 — Snow in Ohara, the morning market at Nishiki, the winter kaiseki menu
  • Day 7 — A detour for one hot bowl of soba on the way to the airport

House rules of this journey

One major plan per day. Nothing after dinner. We move the luggage; you carry a camera and your hands.

This is the skeleton of a journey that happened exactly once. Yours will begin from a blank page.
