Tasmania is not improved by completing the circle

Why a private journey should choose one side of the island and leave the rest for another time.

Tasmania looks compact until every scenic road, producer and walking trail adds another hour. The temptation is to draw a circle. The result is often a sequence of arrivals and departures.

Choose the question before the route

If the journey is about food and coast, Hobart, Bruny and the east can be enough. If it is about geology and wilderness, the highlands and west deserve the time instead.

Three nights in one lodge create possibilities that a one-night stop cannot: a walk chosen after seeing the sky, dinner without checking tomorrow’s departure time, and a second conversation with the same host.

Leaving part of the island unseen is not failure. It is the difference between passing through and staying.
