In Europe, rail and a driver are not opposing choices
Use the train for the beautiful, simple leg and a private vehicle for the connection that would otherwise break the day.

The question is rarely “train or car for the whole journey?” A better route changes mode when the reason changes.
Let rail do what rail does well
Use it when stations are central, the landscape belongs to the ride and luggage can remain manageable. Reserve seats, shorten the platform transfer and send large cases ahead when possible.
Add a driver at the fragile connection
A rural inn may sit ninety minutes beyond the station. A border may require three local buses. That is where a driver protects the day — not necessarily for the six hours before it.
Private travel does not mean avoiding public transport. It means removing the parts that waste your attention.
