The defining decision of this route is skipping the main island. The best of Okinawa lies an hour’s sailing away.

The skeleton

  • Day 1 — Land in Naha, afternoon ferry to the first island, a small inn by the water
  • Days 2–3 — Nothing scheduled. Snorkels, bicycles and books are in the room; using them is up to you
  • Day 4 — A slow boat to a smaller island still; dolphins en route (not guaranteed — nothing at sea is)
  • Days 5–6 — The village’s only diner, reserved for two evenings; the owner sings
  • Day 7 — Back to Naha and straight to the airport

House rules of this journey

No checklist of water activities. Nothing planned within two hours of sunset.

This is the skeleton of a journey that happened exactly once. Yours will begin from a blank page.
